Biomethane Islands – Feasibility Study

  • Help develop an optimisation-based model for the design of anaerobic digestion sites that can service the Biomethane Island, considering product demands, feedstock availability, and environmental conditions. The optimal design includes the sizing and capital costing of on-site storage requirements, feed pre-treatment, digesters, digestate treatment, gas cleaning, combined heat and power, and carbon capture systems. This include quantified estimated emissions, costs and revenues, operational schedules and the technoeconomic feasibility of gas storage and potential other products to handle demand seasonality.

  • Develop an automated methodology that allows integration of results of CFD simulations with kinetic models to evaluate the impact of system mixing properties on biogas production and the biosystem behaviour.
  • Develop advanced Bayesian Optimisation approaches for optimisation of the design and operation of hydraulical, mechanical and pneumatic mixers (angles, speeds, flows, locations, types) to minimize energy usage in anaerobic digestors while maximizing gas yields and minimizing energy inputs, lowering the computational effort required and user inputs, while providing optimality assurances.
